Here are natural ways to help reduce your post-operation knee pain without the use of pain killers.

Ice for Swelling

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, swelling is normal for the first 3 – 6 months post-surgery. Ice packs reduce swelling and inflammation in your knee joint and the surrounding tissue.

It’s highly recommended that you use ice packs 3 – 4 times a day in 20-minute increments.

Elevating Your Leg

Another tip to help swelling is to elevate the leg that was operated on for 1 – 2 hours. Elevating your leg can also help with bruising. Bruising is very normal after surgery and lasts 1 – 2 weeks after surgery.

We recommend a stiff pillow or rolled towels as an elevation tool.

Compression Socks

Compression socks aren’t just for varicose pains. You may have been recommended them not only because they relieve pain, but because they reduce the risk of blood clots. It’s normal to wear these socks for up to 6 weeks after your knee replacement.

Creams and Massages

Creams with capsaicin, menthol, and salicylates can bring you much needed pain relief.

You can choose to massage the cream into your skin. Move your thumbs in small circles around the knee joint. Be careful to not apply any pressure directly on the knee. Keep your leg as relaxed as possible.
